Frown lines
Frown lines, also known as glabellar lines, are the vertical lines that appear on the forehead when someone shows emotions such as anger, frustration or concern.
These lines can also be noticeable in people who frown when concentrating or when exposed to bright sunlight. Frowning is created by the use of various muscles.
At Doctor Contour Clinic, injections against frown and forehead lines are very popular. Dr. Kim Detollenaere injects muscle relaxants to soften these lines, making patients look less grumpy.
- Price: From €150
- Treatment time: 15 minuten
- Effect: 3 tot 4 month
Dr. Kim Detollenaere advises to start muscle relaxant injections early to prevent frown lines from becoming permanently established in the skin.
Once the lines are permanent, it becomes more difficult to reduce them with muscle relaxant injections alone. In such a case, fillers are often also needed to treat the deeper wrinkles.
Treatment for frown lines
- The first choice for treating frown lines is muscle relaxant injections. (Because of Belgian legislation, we are not allowed to mention the specific name of the active substance; often ‘Botox’ is popularly used for this).
- If the frown lines remain clearly visible while the face is relaxed, fillers can be considered as a supplement to reduce the wrinkle.
- Before the treatment, you will receive a few small injections near your eyebrows.

FAQ
Muscle-relaxing injections are administered with a fine needle into specific facial muscles. These injections block the signals between the nerve and the muscle, resulting in reduced muscle activity. This diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines — and in some cases, they may disappear entirely.
Wrinkle reduction begins within 2–8 days after the injection. The optimal effect is usually visible after about 4 weeks and lasts for 6–8 weeks. After 8 weeks, the effect gradually diminishes. By 12 weeks, about 50% of the effect remains, and by 4 months, 80% of the effect has worn off. Many patients choose to repeat the treatment every 3–4 months, though this varies by individual. Men, athletes, and people with more muscular features may require higher or more frequent doses.
Although wrinkle injections are a medical procedure that must be performed by a physician and come with some risk, they are generally considered safe with a low risk of complications.
Common bruising and swelling at the injection site
Mild headaches post-injection in about 10% of cases, usually lasting no more than 24 hours
Drooping of the brow or eyelid in about 2% of patients, which may last up to 3 weeks
Multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results
Infections are very rare
The procedure causes minimal pain. Patients may feel a slight prick during the injection and a brief burning sensation. While the treatment itself only takes around 5 minutes, preparatory steps such as photography, signing the consent form, and disinfection bring the total appointment time to about 30 minutes.
Your aesthetic doctor, Dr. Kim Detollenaere, may advise you to frown or make facial expressions frequently during the first few days.
Avoid applying pressure to the treated area for the first 24–48 hours.
Do not touch or massage the treated area within 24 hours.
Wait at least 6–8 hours before applying makeup, preferably until the next day.
A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled around 2 weeks after your first treatment to assess the results. To maintain the effects, regular treatments are recommended — this can be discussed with your doctor during your appointment.
